Where to find superfoods in Dubai
We’ve searched the city for the faddiest and healthiest foods on offers – here’s where to find superfoods in Dubai.
Acai
Find it at: The Surf Café
Ella Woodward, author of the Deliciously Ella blog and cookbook, champions these Brazilian berries as a source of essential amino acids and antioxidants. Plus, they make the prettiest breakfast bowls. We like the acai bowl from the Surf Café.
The Surf Cafe, Jumeirah Beach Road, Umm Suqeim, Dubai, daily 8am to 11pm. Tel: (04) 4298847. Taxi: Surf Cafe on Jumeirah Beach Road. thesurfcafedubai.com
Bilberry
Find it at: Bilberry.ae
The latest superfood du jour: a wild berry that flourishes in Finland under the midnight sun and the Northern Lights. But there’s more to this berry than a nice backstory – apparently, just 3g of bilberry powder contains more revitalising antioxidants than 30g of fresh blueberries.
Cacao
Find it at: Be Super Natural Kitchen
Cacao is the healthy way to keep those chocolate cravings at bay. It’s a raw, unprocessed form of the treat, and an amazing source of magnesium – said to help us de-stress, sleep better, relax our muscles and even feel happier. Sounds good to us.
At Be Super Natural Kitchen, you can find cacao powder to add to your morning smoothie, cacao nibs for a sweet crunch, and creamy cacao butter to make your own all-natural cereal bars.
Galeries Lafayette, The Dubai Mall, Dubai, daily 10am to 6pm. Tel: (04) 3827333. Metro: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. besupernatural.com
Coconut oil
Find it at: Spinneys
Coconut oil might just be the biggest multi-tasker ingredient ever. You can cook with it, add it to smoothies or porridge, and even use it as a moisturiser or make-up remover. Vita Coco (yep, the folk behind the coconut water) has launched Vita Coco Coconut Oil, which is organic, raw, extra-virgin and cold pressed.
Spirulina
Find it at: Raw Bites
This dark green powder may not look very appetising. But this blue-green algae is a nutritional powerhouse containing essential vitamins, amino acids and anti-oxidants. It will also boost your calcium and magnesium levels. Sprinkle the spirulina crunchies into your smoothies, or mix a spoonful of sun is shining green Superfood (which contains raw spirulina as well as other power greens) into soups and juices.
Sugar-free desserts
Find them at: Muncherie
Muncherie will help you indulge your sweet tooth guilt-free. The brainchild of former yoga teacher Natasha Stephenson, all the desserts are raw, vegan and paleo-friendly, and free from wheat and refined sugar. Most importantly, they’re delicious.
Available at Milk And Honey, Shoreline Apartments Building 10, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, daily 24 hours. Tel: (04) 4328686. Taxi: Palm Jumeirah Shoreline Building 10. instagram.com/muncherie_ae
Gluten-free grains
Find them at: Earthfoods.ae
One of the hardest things about a restricted diet is finding alternative ingredients for your own cooking. The good news is that Earthfoods stocks a full range of healthy flours from Bob’s Red Mill, including coconut flour, quinoa flour and gluten-free mixes for pancakes, bread and even brownies.
Umm, so what exactly is a superfood?
The phrase refers to any single food that contains more than one of the essential nutrients needed for optimal health. The best are raw, plant-based, low calorie and minimally processed – not to mention rich in antioxidants.
