11 things to do in Dubai this weekend
Free foot rubs, award-winning comedians, puppy play dates and ice cream delivered by jet ski. Here’s what to do in Dubai this weekend…
Thursday 14
Get the weekend started early with a long lunch
Take your time if you can (hey, it’s Thursday after all), but Firebird Diner’s express business lunch is also good for those in more of a rush. Expect a huge array of American classics – think grilled cheese sammie, creamed corn and lobster rolls – that’ll have you rolling back to the office.
Firebird Diner, Building 9, Gate Village, DIFC, 12pm to 4pm on weekdays. Lunch package is Dhs140. Click here for more information.
A comedy night to remember
Catch stand-up legend and award-winning Canadian comic Sean Collins live on stage as The Laughter Factory tour returns to the Middle East. Collins (left) is a veteran of Live at the Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, while British up-and-comers Ola (right) and Michael Fabri also join him on the bill. These guys are all seasoned pros on the comedy circuit, so heckle at your peril…
Movenpick Hotel, The Walk, JBR, Dubai, 8pm to 11.30pm. Tickets start at Dhs140. Tel; 50 8786 728. Click here for more information.
Try Vanitas’ new menu
The Palazzo Versace’s signature Italian restaurant, Vanitas, is offering up a brand-new menu – including Italian food names so hard to pronounce it’s guaranteed to be fancy. We recommend the grilled octopus, and the coral lobster “chitarra” – a generous hunk of seafood on a bed of fresh pasta, doused in a creamy bisque. Yum.
Vanitas, Palazzo Versace Dubai, Dubai Creek. Tel: (04) 5568820. palazzoversace.ae.
Friday 15
Cash in a pampering freebie
This week’s unbearable heat and humidity taken a toll on your body? Even if it hasn’t, use this Armani Hotel Spa deal as an excuse anyway. If you book a wrap, scrub, facial or massage lasting at least 50 minutes, you’ll get a complimentary 30-minute spa treatment added on. Choose your preferred pamper from the Mu, Liberta or Fluidita menus (all say the word relaxing somewhere, which is what we wanted to hear).
Armani Hotel, Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai, Sun to 9am to 10pm. Prices for treatments start at Dhs520. Tel: (04) 888 3282. Click here for more information.
Get ice-cream… with a twist
An ice-cream party clearly sounds like the best kind of party there is – but Uber are going one step further by delivering your cool treat by, drum roll please, jet ski. That’s right, for one day only they’re ditching the cars and taking to the water for some customers. Get down to The Walk at Dubai Marina to get your mitts on six Magnums for a flat fee of Dhs40 (or get on a boat for the day, they’ll deliver to you too). Not near the marina? You can also cash in – it’ll just be delivered in a normal car. Just select ‘ice cream’ via the Uber app, and one should shortly be on the way.
The Walk, Dubai Marina, Dubai. 2pm to 6pm, uber.com/cities/dubai.
Taste your way around India
Enjoy an a-la-carte brunch with a twist at Spice and Ice. The progressive Indian restaurant has launched this swanky new dining option, where you can sample dishes from around the region with a mix of appetisers and main courses. Plenty of options will be whipped up at live cooking stations, plus you can see chefs make the popular Indian snack dhokla in just 30 seconds. (There’s also dessert platters for afterwards, if you still have room).
Spice and Ice, Cluster A, JLT, Dubai, 12pm to 4pm. Dhs199 per person. For more information and reservations, call (050) 5529686.
Friday night live at Lock Stock & Barrel
It’s always abuzz at one of our favourite rustic rock ‘n’ roll venues, with Lock Stock & Barrel’s resident rockers 13 Daze lined up to play a set from 11pm. Oh, and if you rock up early, drinks are buy one get one free from 5pm to 8pm.
Lock Stock & Barrel, 8th floor, Grand Millennium Hotel, Barsha Heights. July 15, 11pm. lsdubai.com. Tel: (04) 5149195.

Play in an all-day roll up this Saturday and be in the running to win some seriously cool prizes. (But there’s roll-ups and major tournaments on until September, so don’t fret if you can’t make it on to the green this weekend). Puppy play day
If your pup’s feeling a little isolated with the summer heat and all, ABVC Kennels & Cattery in Al Quoz will be hosting a special play day for small and medium dogs and their human parents. Introduce Fido to some new dog-buddies, and make use of the drinks and free WiFi so you can Snapchat how cute it all is. Booking is required though! So make sure to call in advance.
ABVC Kennels & Cattery, 26th Street, Al Quoz. July 16, 1pm to 5pm. Tel: (04) 3471028. abvc.ae.
Take a summer daycation
Enjoy the sun before it gets just too hot to bear (well, it’s pretty darn scorching right now but hey, you can always spend hours in the sea). Grab yourself a beach day pass for Madinat Jumeirah’s private beach this weekend and enjoy the tranquility of a holiday without the airfare. You can have lunch from the comfort of your sunbed, and that view of the Burj Al Arab ain’t half bad either.
Madinat Jumeirah Resort, Jumeirah, Dubai, day pass costs Dhs395 including Dhs150 food and beverage vouchers, children’s pass costs Dhs150 including Dhs100 food and beverage vouchers. Click here for more information.
