The Moscow City Ballet is coming to Dubai Opera
And they will be performing arguably the greatest love story of all time…
Ballet fans we have good news, one of Russia’s leading troupes are coming to Dubai, and they will be performing the classic Romeo and Juliet from April 19 to April 21 next year (tickets go on sale tomorrow).
Romeo and Juliet, the needs-no-introduction Shakespearian tale of star-crossed lovers, was first performed as a complete ballet in 1938, and we can expect the Moscow Ballet’s rendition to be truly world class (they are one of Russia’s largest touring ballet companies)
Led by principal dancers Yulia Zhuravleva (Juliet) and Dmitry Lazovik (Romeo), we are especially looking forward to Victor Smirnov Golovanov’s accompanying score being performed by a live orchestra (fast fact: it was originally penned in 1935).
Two years ago, ahead of a Sleeping Beauty show in Emirates Palace, principal dancer Yulia Zhuravleva, told us that Romeo and Juliet is her favourite ballet: “I love everything about it, the emotive music of Segey Prokofiev, unique choreography of Victor Smirnov-Golovanov and the timeless tragic story of two young lovers.”
A top ballerina performing her favourite show of all time? We expect good things.
The Moscow City Ballet was founded in 1988 by Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, and the private troupe (it’s not supported by the government at all) is known for its excellent group dancers, aka corps de ballet, and its adherence to the traditions of Russian ballet.
Keen to book? You’ll be able to nab tickets here from Wednesday September 20.
