Gadget Corner: Logitech G703 & Logitech PowerPlay review
A game-changing wireless mouse and charging pad combo straight out of the future…
The technology in mice has come a long way since the old trackball days. The one on your desk probably uses a combination of lasers and Bluetooth to give you a smooth wireless experience while clicking about your computer.
However, Logitech are offering a future-looking upgrade to your run-of-the-mill mouse setup that’s not only innovative, but difficult to come back from.
The Logitech G703 wireless mouse and its companion PowerPlay charging pad are nothing short of a game-changer, now allow us to explain why.
We love that it practically never needs charging
Wireless mice are great but you know what sucks? Remembering to make sure they are either constantly charged or you have enough spare batteries lying around. The Logitech PowerPlay mat solves all of that. It’s essentially a specialised mouse pad (and one of size, at that) that passes on a charge through the bottom of a compatible mouse (in this case the G703) so that it’s constantly receiving power as long as it’s plugged in and switched on.
Sounds like magic? Not quite, but it’s still pretty cool. The Logitech G703 has a small disc-shaped PowerCore module that slots underneath it, and that’s what draws the charge. It feels like you have a mouse that is constantly at 100 per cent which, if you’ve ever sat down to do some work or play a game only to find that your mouse is dead, is a godsend.
And the mouse works great by itself as well
While the PowerPlay mat is the cool innovative piece of tech in this pairing, the G703 mouse isn’t too shabby in its own right. It works great as a standalone device without the PowerPlay pad – you simply swap out the PowerCore module with an included 10g weight and pair it to your PC (either Mac or Windows) and you’re good to go. You will need to bring it back to the PowerPlay pad for a battery top-up, however.
Ideally, the G307 is designed with gamers in mind so it includes built in LEDs in the scrollwheel and the ‘G’ logo where your palm rests. It’s definitely not as garish as some other gaming mice, and we reckon that the G703 is perfectly serviceable as a day-to-day clicker for office work and browsing as well.
That gaming pedigree does give it an edge when it comes to precision, however, with a massive range of customisable sensitivity and button functions that you can adjust via Logitech’s Gaming Software app if you so wish.
So, should you buy it?
As revolutionary as the ability to have a completely worry-free wireless mouse is, it certainly doesn’t come cheap.
The Logitech G703 and the PowerPlay mat are each sold separately for Dhs539 and Dhs579, respectively. That’s a cool Dhs1,118 for the pair, which is a ludicrous amount of money to spend on a mouse.
We suppose that if you factor in the amount of frustration you’d avoid by never needing to charge your mouse again – or the money you’d potentially save on batteries – a case could be made for owning this excellent combo, but you’d have to really be into it, and possibly a pretty hardcore gamer.
It can’t be stressed enough, however, that Logitech have come up with pair of products that have redefined a category that we didn’t even realise needed shaking up. One thing’s for sure, we’ll find it tough going back to our regular wireless mouse when we inevitably need to return the review sample.
Score: B+
