Summer is in full swing, and that means less time spent outside and plenty of excuses to be curled up on the couch in front of the TV.
Streaming service Netflix is the ultimate go-to for a binge-worthy unwind, and we’ve cherry-picked the best movies, TV shows and documentaries to check out in August.
So heat up some popcorn, dim the lights and get stuck in to one of these…
Like Father – August 3
A workaholic young executive is left at the altar and winds up on her Caribbean honeymoon cruise with her estranged father. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a meh movie, but throw Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer and Seth Rogen into the mix (plus a trailer that looks to give the film a genuine amount of heart) and Like Father looks like a fun twist on the traditional rom-com stable.
Demetri Martin: The Overthinker – August 10
Known for his clever comedy and signature one-liners, Demetri Martin’s newest comedy special sees him muse on doughnut holes, dogs, sports bars and the alphabet’s most aggressive letters. The above trailer gives you a taste of what to expect, showcasing Martin’s aptitude for augmenting his comedy with drawings.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before – August 17
A teenage girl’s life goes from imaginary to out of control when her secret letters to every boy she’s ever fallen for are mysteriously mailed out. Based on the New York Times bestselling Young Adult novel of the same name, this movie is a lighthearted and funny look at teenage romance gone awry.
Disenchantment – August 18
Matt Groening created some of television’s most beloved characters in the Simpsons and Futurama, and now it looks like he’s about to recreate some of that magic in a new Netflix exclusive show set in a fantasy world. Disenchantment is a similarly zany animated series that follows the misadventures of a hard-drinking princess, her feisty elf companion and her personal demon.
Follow This – August 23
A short-form documentary series that sees reporters from BuzzFeed probe topics ranging from quirky internet crazes like ASMR to more serious ones like safe injection spaces for opioid users. It’s an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how award-winning journalists chase stories that are a little outside of the norm.
Ozark (Season 2) – August 31
This gripping series that follows the money laundering exploits of the Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and family as they relocate to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks is back for what looks to be a stellar second season. If you miss the intensity of Breaking Bad and enjoy the off-the-cuff humour of Bateman, then Ozark will be right up your alley.
