You can now renew your car in Dubai without clearing outstanding fines
Motorists will have more chance of their fines being wiped altogether…
Listen up Dubai drivers. If you’re dreading having to renew your car due to a build-up of pesky fines, now you can sleep easy.
Dubai Police has relaxed the rules on fine repayment in line with their safety initiative, which gives increased discounts over time to drivers of exemplary standard. The initiative, launched in the Year of Tolerance, aims to encourage safer driving by offering up to 100 per cent off fines if a driver does not commit any violations for a full calendar year.
However, residents noticed that it would be difficult to make use of this perk, as previously all fines should be cleared before annual car registration renewal. Now Dubai Police have instructed the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to allow drivers to renew their car without clearing their fines, although it’s not clear when they will have to pay them back by if they don’t receive the full discount.

Here’s how the sliding scale works:
- Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for three months can obtain a reduction of 25 per cent of their current fines
- Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for six months can obtain a reduction of 50 per cent of their current fines
- Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for nine months can obtain a reduction of 75 per cent of their current fines
- Drivers who do not commit any traffic violations for 12 months can obtain a reduction of 100 per cent of their current fines
“The vehicle’s licence will be renewed regardless of the amount of the accumulated fines or any periods of confiscation imposed on the cars, or the number of offenses committed,” said Dubai Police chief, major general Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri.
According to The National, Dubai Police have already reported a decrease in accidents since the initiative was launched in February, compared to the same three-month timespan in 2018.
