In 1990 history was made when for the first and only time, the UAE qualified for the FIFA World Cup. Now with the help of Image Nation Abu Dhabi the incredible story is receiving a documentary adaptation, set to begin production this summer.
The documentary seeks to not only tell the story of the team that earned the nation one of its proudest sporting achievements, but also of the fans, the coaches and the journalists that followed them there.
It hopes to accurately portray the emotional journey from the jubilation of qualification to the disappointment that followed the team’s swift exit from the competition.
Part of the film will see all of the original members of the team reunited on a trip to this year’s World Cup in Brazil. The production team hope to capture the memories of the old squad and their achievements whilst they watch the 2014 competition unfold.
“This is completely different from any other project we have produced,” said Mohammed Al Mubarak, Image Nation’s chairman. “This is not only about producing a really entertaining film, but will also serve as a historical document that finally details the legacy of what those players achieved for both UAE and Middle East football.”
The UAE qualified for Italia 90 following a nail-bitingly intense Asia qualifying competition in Singapore, 1989.
The team edged past traditionally stronger teams from China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, North Korea, as well as Qatar, earning themselves the a legendary reputation in UAE, where they are hailed as the ‘golden generation’ of the sport in the region.
The film will combine archival footage, on-location shots and interviews, and is being led by creative producer Stevan Riley and UAE-based director Nizar Sfair.
Image Nation Abu Dhabi is also reaching out to the public, asking that anyone with a particular story or memory from the event get in touch either by calling (050) 8120599, or by e-mailing UAEworldcupfilm@gmail.com
