Dubai doesn’t want for much when it comes to shopping, but that hasn’t stopped Nakheel taking a significant towards creating a brand new mall in the Emirate.
According to plans released by the developer, the new hub at Jumeirah Village Triangle will be spread over two million square foot and contain shopping, dining and entertainment, all situated alongside Al Khail Road, on the southern edge of the residential area.
As well as a multi-screen cinema, the mall will also feature a supermarket, department stores, speciality shops and a raft of cafes and restaurants.
This week’s appointment of engineering consultancy Dar Al-Handasah is the first of many key steps, and will be followed by the release of the construction tender early next year. Completion is the project is not expected until 2017.
It is not the first time the Dubai-based developer have enlisted the help of Dar Al-Handasah, with the international group having a hand in The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah, the Dragon Mart extension and nearly 3,000 villas. There are also plans for a much smaller – around 500,000 sq ft – shopping mall with cinemas, a supermarket and restaurants at neighbouring Jumeirah Village Circle.

The announcement’s are just the latest in a fresh batch this year, following the likes of Deira Islands – a development will add a further 40km to Dubai’s coastline, spread across four islands – The Pointe on The Palm opposite Atlantis, and Nakheel Mall, a Dhs2.5billion all-purpose shopping complex with 418,000 square metres of retail space, dining and other entertainment at the northern end of the Palm’s trunk.
Of course, all announcements pale in significance to that of Mall Of The World (just check out the video below!), an eight million square foot complex which will include the world’s largest indoor theme park – covered by a glass dome that will be open during the winer – and a 7km ‘covered street network’ that remsembles more of a European high street than a typical mall. It will be the centrepiece of ‘the world’s first temperature-controlled city’, which is also set to include over 100 new hotels and apartment buildings as well as a cultural district complete with theatres and museums.
The Mall of the World complex will be able to handle 180 million visitors each year.
