To mark the start of the new art season, Alserkal Avenue in Al Qouz – Dubai’s vibrant creative district – is hosting Galleries Night, and throwing open the doors of its best creative spaces to the community.
Some of the talented artists set to be involved include Pakistani artist Mariam Suhail, who will be making her Dubai debut at the Grey Noise Gallery with her exhibition Accidental Excavations. Modern Arab artists will also be showcased at Green Art Gallery’s collection Works on Paper: Hikayat, which will include contributions from the likes of Khouzayma Alwani, Mahmoud Hammad and Adham Ismail.
Meanwhile, if you feel like picking something for your own walls, from 10am to 6pm Ayyam Gallery will be hosting a preview of their Young Collectors Auction, which will take place on September 30. It will feature work from esteemed Syrian and Iranian artists including Asaad Arabi, Leila Nseir and Marwan Kassab Bachi.
Around the corner at Gulf Photo Plus, photography enthusiasts can meet and chat with Khaled Hasan and Neo Ntsoma, two exhibiting photographers from Majority World, an agency that showcases the work of photographers from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
It’s not just about the art though. A4 Space, one of the more recent additions to Alserkal Avenue, will be hosting a pop-up preview of local designers who will be featured at Fashion Forward in October, and there’ll be music from Freshly Ground Sounds, a collective of talented artists on the local scene. The night will be rounded off with even more musical performances at The Fridge.
Alserkal Avenue as we know it emerged in 2007 and now thrives with 25 art spaces, with housing for almost 40 more creative organisations at a new development which will broaden the current focus on contemporary art to design, architecture, fashion and media. The new area will continue to nurture the home-grown art scene with artists’ studios and residency programmes. Outdoor event facilities will host everything from film screenings to concerts and community events, and independent cafés will allow you to make a day of it.
