A stunning video shot over the skies of the UAE has gone viral, clocking up almost 100,000 views in less than a day.

The footage shows an ex fighter pilot from Switzerland – and Guinness Book record holder – Yves Rossy flying using jet-propelled wings in tandem with a light aeroplane.

Rossy, who more commonly goes by the name ‘Jetman’ was the first man to use the futuristic suit, but has this week set new highs for the industry alongside Aerobatics Champion Veres Zoltan.

Flying with such contraptions isn’t exactly new – the first flight was over the Swiss Alps more than six and a half years ago – while he ‘went mainstream’ in 2008, emulating Louis Bleriot, who 99 years earlier had crash landed, and crossing the channel.

The wings themselves weigh in at 55kg and span two metres across the pilot’s back. The four jet-cat P200 engines and the direction are controlled by joysticks tapped into the hand grips. They have been known to reach speeds in excess of 200km per hour.

According to his official website, Jetman is ‘the culmination of decades of fulfilling a childhood dream through technological innovation, determination, teamwork and courage. The synergy between Dubai and Jetman is easy to see. Dreaming the impossible, striving for excellence and shaping perceptions make this an incredibly powerful partnership.’

The first hint that something amazing was on the horizon came when the Sheikh Hamdan, the Crown Prince of Dubai, posted an Instagram image of Jetman on National Day.

The video is the first to appear on a new YouTube account, XDubai. The slogan for the page is ‘Defy Everything’, and What’s On await with bated breath exactly what is next.
