Wallflowers need not apply as big room Dutch stars Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano make their Dubai debut at Pacha this week. With their Come Follow track out now on Spinnin’ and a recent BBC Radio1 Essential Mix under their belt as part of the show’s Future Stars series, the lads will no doubt be in turbo charged mood when they touchdown for Pacha’s United As Everyone party.
Describing their sound as “no boundaries sound-wise with high energy”, Sunnery is on record as saying: “The passion we have for music, we want to reflect that on the crowd and get it back. To connect with the crowd, put the love out and get the love back, and make a party together, that’s the whole sense of DJing, I think.”
The pair has come a long way since they met in 2006 in an Amsterdam clothing store where Sunnery worked and Ryan applied for an internship. “We started this 15 years ago together and it’s all like a dream,” added Sunnery. “We started playing in our bedrooms, making mixtapes for our friends and that was it. All of a sudden we had a chance to play in clubs and now we’re playing all around the world.”
In fact, it was Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello who helped the lads on the road to success. “He is the reason we broke all around the world,” recalled Sunnery. “He saw us in Amsterdam playing one day at a beach party and he picked us up, booked us to play with the Swedish House Mafia, and then things started really moving.”
Steve wasn’t the only member of the SHM impressed with Sunnery and Ryan. After playing with them in Ibiza, Axwell commented: “If there was a Dutch version of Swedish House Mafia, it would be Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano.”
Having won over the likes of Armin van Buuren, Sander van Doorn, David Guetta, Pete Tong and an army of other peers with their productions and remixes, the duo are now regular fixtures at some of the biggest festivals on the planet. “For us, it doesn’t matter if we play in front of 10,000 or ten people,” said Ryan. “We still play with the same energy.”
