Pedestrians in Downtown better watch their step from now on.

A news report earlier this week described the introduction of new fines for those caught crossing over the Dubai Trolley track at undesignated spots.

New signposts along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard warn pedestrians who cross at areas other than the designated pedestrian crossings will be in strict violation, and face a fine of Dhs1,000.

Similar warnings can already be found at the other end of town where pedestrians crossing the Dubai Tram track at undesignated places in Dubai Marina are also fined Dh1,000.

In relative terms, these new fines are at the lower end of the fine spectrum: Jumping a red light at the tramway intersection and causing an accident leading to injuries, incurs a fine between Dh5,000 and Dh15,000, while jumping a red traffic light at the Dubai tramway intersection, which causes an accident leading to death of a person, is punishable with a fine between Dh10,000 and Dh30,000.

The pretty San Francisco-style Dubai Trolley will eventually run for 7km along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard and around surrounding areas, servicing Burj Khalifa, Souk Al Bahar, Dubai Fountain, The Dubai Mall and the upcoming Opera District. For now, it spans just over one kilometre and you can hitch a ride between The Dubai Mall Vida Downtown Dubai for Dhs20. Just be careful that you cross the road in the correct location.
