This new Dubai mega-district looks out of this world
There’s a new district coming to town and it’s looking pretty sweet…
Dubai prides itself on being a future-thinking city – and a just-announced new development is taking things one step further.
Say hello to Jumeirah Central, a 47-million-square-foot district set to be built alongside Sheikh Zayed Road that H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced on Saturday.
In line with Dubai’s ‘smart city’ movement, Jumeirah Central will be near the Sharaf DG metro station on the Jumeirah side of Sheikh Zayed Road and will feature environmentally-friendly transport options including aerial gondolas.
If you’re not sure what an aerial gondola looks like, it’s one of those things flying around the top of the picture below:
Yep, we definitely want to go to work on one of those things.
However if aerial gondolas aren’t your favourite form of transport, you can make use of the district’s comprehensive cycling network which spans more than 33 parks and open spaces.

*What three of the Expo 2020 pavilions will look like*
*There’s going to be a rotating skyscraper in Dubai by 2020*
And that’s not all – 35,000 residents will be able to call Jumeirah Central home, and can make use of a range of facilities including schools, offices, parks, malls, smart police services and more.
Half of the district will be open space, and 1 million square feet will be climate controlled for the summer months.
If you’re a mall trawler, there will be three shopping destinations totalling 9 million square feet, as well as 4.5 million square feet of outdoor shopping space.
The new district will offer up 7,200 hotel rooms for visitors – the largest number of hotel rooms centred in one district.
While a completion date for Jumeirah Central is yet to be set, construction is looking to begin within the coming months.
The development keeps in line with Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for Dubai’s future as an internationally recognised ‘smart city’.
“Jumeriah Central is a clear milestone in our journey towards building the city of the future and the creation of engaged and happy communities,” Sheikh Mohammed said. “We will not stop investing in our economy, and these projects are tools to expedite that journey of growth.
“We are confident in the strength of our economy and are optimistic for the future of our nation. To that end, our vision will continuously evolve and expand.”
