Gyms in Dubai: New workouts to try in the city
Let’s get physical…
Fallen off the fitness bandwagon? Don’t stress, there’s no shame in hopping back on like you never left. Here are seven new fitness classes to get you motivated again…
Burn at UnderdogBoxn
Love a good HIIT combo guaranteed to destroy fat and drive muscle tone? Well, look no further than the new ‘Burn’ class at Underdog. We say new – it’s actually a riff off a class that Underdog owners Brian and Linda used to run in a different gym circa 2015, which we were obsessed with. Burn comprises four stations: rowing machine, weights, TRX, and the gruelling assault bike, with a brief respite between each. Classes rotate between upper body, lower body and total body sessions. Sound intense? That’s because it is.
UnderdogBoxn, Dubai Media City, daily 6.30am and 7pm, Dhs120. Tel: (0)4 2501000. underdogboxn.com
Blackout at Wellfit
In the dark neon chambers of Blackout, located at enormous new gym Wellfit in JVC, you get the chance to practise a bit of boxing with your own individual punching bag. Assigned a bag and a corresponding workout bench, you swap between the two every five to seven minutes for a different set of exercises or jab combinations. The real killer might be the HIIT interludes, which culminate in a final knockout round on the bag that leaves everyone drenched in sweat under the neon lights. Outside the Blackout studio, Wellfit offers a range of other classes, including spin, parkour, MMA, crossfit and more. You’d need at least a month to get through all the new classes.

Spin classes at Camp
Modern new fitness club, Camp, opened its doors back in January in Downtown, offering high-powered 45-minute spin classes that focus on mental strength. Owner Kimberly Thorne and Mohamed Elsayed stress that the club’s key focus is on mental training, allowing people to tap into their best selves, discovering their physical capability through the use of rhythm and movement. With more than 30 classes per week, each workout will take participants through choreographed movements, moving as one to build strength, stamina, and torch killer calories. Spread over two floors, the club offers a full mezzanine lounge for ladies, including private working spaces, and luxury salon services from 306 Spa. On the main level, clients can fuel up before or after class with a specially curated menu from Soft Serve Society (S3), including acai bowls, smoothies, detox juices, protein shakes and more.

Release tension and stress from your muscles with this new 75-minute therapeutic class. Small balls are placed under specific points of the body then you’ll be guided on how to roll yourself over them to tackle restrictions in the muscle. Daily life can cause tension across the neck, shoulders, back and ankles; ‘Roll and Release’ aims to leave you feeling stronger and more flexible after just one session. Your first class at Matcha is Dhs95, and after that it’s Dhs115.

DanceFit, spin and bootcamps at Junk
Junk is a dive-bar meets hybrid gym that blends the energy of a nightclub with the challenge of a workout. There’s one large black box room where all classes take place, including Beatbox (box fit); RE-Cycle (spin); DanceFit (dance/cardio); RE-Boot (high intensity conditioning bootcamp); and Yoga. The brainchild behind Junk is Dubai’s party king DJ Chris Wright – the man who created the incredibly successful Secret Parties brunches that cover the whole of the city. And if there’s one thing this guy knows, it’s how to throw down a party. Read more here.
