Dubai drivers, take note: The Dubai Police have introduced stricter penalties for traffic violations, including vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days according to an article by the Khaleej Times. If you’re caught using your mobile phone while driving, tailgating, or making sudden lane changes, your car could be confiscated for a month under the updated federal traffic law.

Here are the traffic offences that can now result in a 30-day vehicle impoundment in Dubai:

  • Using a mobile phone while driving
  • Tailgating (not maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front)
  • Sudden deviation or lane change that poses a danger to lives or property
  • Heavy vehicles failing to adhere to lane discipline

Fines for these offences range from Dh400 to Dh1,000, with four black points added to your record. Now, Dubai’s new law adds vehicle impoundment as an extra consequence.

In addition, certain violations will result in a 14-day vehicle impoundment, such as:

  • Entering the road without making sure it is clear
  • Reversing the vehicle in a manner that poses a danger to life or property or traffic safety
  • Lane indiscipline
  • Stopping in the middle of the road for no reason
  • Dangerous overtaking
  • Lack of necessary safety and security conditions in the vehicle
  • Stopping the vehicle on the shoulder of the road in non-emergency situations, or overtaking vehicles from the shoulder
  • Driving a vehicle without a licence plate
  • Driving a vehicle in a manner that obstructs traffic
  • Making changes to the vehicle colour without permission
