Art on show: five exhibitions not to miss this month
From miniature ceramics to mammoth paintings, this month’s pick of art shows comes in all shapes and sizes…
Frank Stella
Until January 4
American artist Frank Stella was a pioneer of the minimalist movement and gained worldwide attention for his monotone painting series Black Paintings in the ’50s. But in the following decades he moved on to creating unique relief pieces. The result? These unique 3D wall sculptures. There may only be six pieces on display, but this exhibition is still well worth a visit.

Symphony in Cubism
Until December 31
A special exhibit exploring the popular style of cubism. The Pakistani artist works primarily with bold primary colours and geometric shapes to create crowd-pleasing pieces.

The Good Old Evolution
Until January 10
Who says size matters when it comes to art? This collection of playful ceramic sculptures are the work of quirky Swiss-born, New York-based artist Olaf Breuning. Returning to the Al Quoz gallery for the second time, Breuning never sticks to one medium, skipping between drawings, sculptures, videos and installations. What unites all his work are the nods to pop culture and the feeling that you’re getting a small, bizarre insight into his mind.

My Broken Dream
Until January 10
Don’t miss you chance to catch this mammoth painting by Dia Azzawi. Get lost in this busy monochromatic canvas, which reaches ten metres wide and four metres tall and took the Baghdad-born artist two years to complete. Initially a reaction to the US invasion of Iraq, the painting contains hints and influences from Arabic folkore and was created alongside his piece Five Children Playing Football – the sister painting is currently on display in Qatar.

Solar Flare, Always Red
Until January 7
This abstract exhibition is really an installation to be experienced as a whole. Walking into the space, you’ll find seemingly random objects dotted around, from a bomber jacket to a Tom Ford Oud Wood scent diffuser. Created by the Dubai-based Saudi Arabian artist Raja’a Khalid, the installation was inspired by themes of consumer culture stretching back to 1984 – a time when Madonna’s Material Girl was in the charts and Dubai’s skyline was flying up.
Grey Noise, Unit 24, Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Dubai, Mon to Thur and Sat 11am to 7pm, free. Tel: (04) 3790764. Taxi: Alserkal Avenue. greynoise.org
