Our top pick of the movies out in cinemas this week is Jackie, a biopic of First Lady Jackie Kennedy, with Natalie Portman in the starring role.

Here are all the new flicks you’ll be able to go see from today…

Jackie

Jackie caused major buzz at last year’s Dubai International Film Festival, and it’s easy to see why. Starring Natalie Portman as the eponymous first lady, it’s a fascinating insight into the goings on around her in the aftermath of John F Kennedy’s assassination, with Billy Crudup as a reporter interviewing the newly widowed Jackie. It’s arguably Portman’s best role since Black Swan, and might even be enough to bag her an Oscar.

Split

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those directors who disappoints audiences (The Last Airbender, Lady in the Water) as often as he wows them (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable). Split seems like a return to form: a psychological horror starring James McAvoy as Kevin, a man suffering from split personality disorder – with at least 23 different personalities – who kidnaps three teenage girls. McAvoy is excellent as always, and the girls’ interaction with his various personalities – including a terrifying incarnation called ‘The Beast’ – makes for tense viewing.

Silence

Movie buffs will have heard about Silence, the Martin Scorsese film that was apparently decades in the making. It tells the story of two Jesuit priests in the 1600s (Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield), who travel to Japan when they hear that their mentor (Liam Neeson) has renounced their faith and converted to Buddhism – a mission made even more dangerous by the fact that Christianity is illegal at the time. You’ll have to watch it to find out if it lives up to the hype, but so far the reviews are promising.
