This is your chance to be a real-life superhero…

Want to show off your crazy juggling skills? Have a burning desire to reveal your beatboxing talents? But more importantly, would you like to help sick children feel better – one smile at a time?

Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital in Dubai has just launched a volunteer programme called Abtaal Al Jalila, or Al Jalila Heroes (FYI, the hospital is named after Sheikha Al Jalila, the nine-year-old daughter of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai).

UAE residents over the age of 16 can apply to be “superheroes” at the hospital. You’ll have to be available to volunteer for at least two hours a week, and be prepared to abide by a dress code “which may include but is not restricted to capes and headgear”.

Oh, and you’ll also be asked to reveal your “super power”. Options include balloon artistry, beat boxing, juggling, dancing, singing, storytelling, and even ventriloquism.

The programme was set up in line with the Year of Giving, and is aimed at involving the wider community in contributing to children’s health and happiness.

Al Jalila is the first fully-fledged paediatric hospital in the UAE, and says it “believes the multicultural community that Dubai is renowned for can contribute to making children’s lives better.”

What better way to participate in the Year of Giving? All you have to do is register via the hospital website. Every application is screened, and applicants will go through an interview process before being accepted as a volunteer.
